Six foreigners - five Myanmars and a Bangladeshi - and a local suspected to have trafficked Myanmars and Bangladeshis into Langkawi last May were recently charged in court, said Kedah police chief Datuk Zamri Yahya.

He told a press conference, Wednesday that they were charged in the Alor Setar Sessions Court on June 26 and July 27 and that their cases came up for hearing.

He added that the local owned the boats the illegals were brought in.

On May 11, 1,158 illegal immigrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh were caught after they boats they came in disembarked them on the shores of Langkawi island.

The illegals were sent to the Belantik Immigration Depot in Sik, Kedah.
