The Malaysian Bar is organising the 'Walk for Peace and Freedom 2014' on October 16.

The peaceful assembly is to protest on the recent case of arrests, charges and investigations under the Sedition Act 1948.

Christopher Leong, President of the Malaysian Bar, has called for members and pupils in chambers to attend the walk and express their aspirations and support for a better Malaysia premised on peace, harmony, unity, understanding and freedom from fear, intimidation, exploitation, oppression and extremism.

“The Malaysian Bar believes it is robust debate, diversity of opinion, and freedom of speech and expression that will ultimately promote, inculcate and maintain true and enduring peace, harmony, unity and mutual respect amongst Malaysians,” he said in a statement issued by the Malaysian Bar Council.

Malaysian Bar welcomes the Prime Minister’s vision, articulated on 11 July 2012, to “strengthen national cohesion by protecting national unity and nurturing religious harmony”, and stands in support of the Prime Minister’s repeated pledge to repeal the Sedition Act 1948, it added.

“The Sedition Act 1948 is antithetical and counter-productive to these values, and to our aspirations for a better Malaysia,” he said.
