Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) will display the recordings of various traffic offences committed by the public, especially beating the traffic lights, to increase public awareness on road safety.

PPj Urban Services Department vice-president Datuk Abd Ghani Ahmad said the move was still in the planning stage with the aim of reducing road accidents in the area.

He said the number of road accidents in Putrajaya was worrying with 24 fatal cases reported from 2009 to 2011. However, he added, PPJ did have the statistics for 2012 until 2013.

"PPj has closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera recordings of people beating the traffic lights but for the time being, PPj will not be issuing summonses to the offenders.

"We will continue with monitoring through the CCTVs, controlling traffic flow and cooperating with the police in their investigations on road accidents and in crime prevention in Putrajaya."

He said this after attending the Road Safety Carnival organised by PPj and the Road Safety Department in Precinct 9, here, today. It was officiated by Federal Territories Deputy Minister Datuk Dr J. Loga Bala Mohan.

Also present was the Road Safety Department's director-general Datuk Dr Tam Weng Wah.

Dr J. Loga said road users must have a responsible attitude by not violating traffic rules as accidents would also involve other road users.

He hoped that such efforts as a road safety carnival could raise public awareness on how important it is for people to obey traffic rules for the safety of all road users.
