Police arrested a lorry driver who escaped after crashing into a car and causing the death of a pregnant woman at a traffic light junction in Jalan Masai Baru, on Monday.

Johor Bahru (south) District Police chief (JBS), ACP Sulaiman Salleh said the man in his 60s was arrested at the JBS Traffic police station about 10am, Tuesday.

He added that the man will be investigated under the Road Transport Act 1987 Section 41 (1) for reckless driving resulting in death.

"We detained the driver to be investigated and we will see whether he was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"After the accident the driver fled but we found him today and have arrested him for further investigation," he said on Tuesday.

At about 4pm Monday, the victim, Noor Hayati Che Aziz, 30, who was seven-months pregnant, died when the car driven by her husband Proton Pesona, Mohd Faizal Rosli, 31, was hit by a lorry at the intersection of Jalan Masai Baru.

The victim was pronounced dead at the Sultan Ismail Hospital.

Mohd Faizal and his two sons, Mohammed Farhan Daniel, 6, and Noor Fazliyana Dania, 5, however, suffered minor injuries while the victim's brother, Nasarudin, 20, was seriously injured and was being treated at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

The victim's mother-in-law, Zaiton Isa said that the victim and her family had planned to move into their new home in Masai soon after receiving the keys from the developer last week.

During the incident, the victims were on their way home to meet their new home’s lawyer after sending Noor Hayati’s brother to Larkin Bus Terminal to return to Kuantan.

He said Noor Hayati was a good daughter-in-law and was to give birth to their third child in May, at their home in Lubuk China, Negeri Sembilan.

"During the delivery of her two older children, Noor Hayati went through her confinement at my home. She considered me like her own mother, and I love her like a daughter.

"My heart breaks every time her children ask for their deceased mother," she said when met at the hospital mortuary.

According to Zaiton, Noor Hayati remains will be brought to Lubuk China for burial.
