Parents and guardians should be made responsible to ensure their children grow up in a safe environment.

Childline Malaysia Project Director, P H Wong said parents should also teach their children basic safety in a bid to prevent them from harm.

“Parents should always be vigilant apart from reminding their children on safety because children at that age already understand basic safety aspects such as using safety belts,” said Wong who was commenting on the recent incident involving a four-year-old child who was seriously injured after playing with firecrackers.

Apart from that, she said, parents should instill safety awareness and education in their children – something that is still lacking among Malaysians.

However, Wong added, adults, be it parents, guardians or teachers, should keep a watchful eye on children at all times.

“Children still do not understand the dangers of fireworks. Although it has been banned, there are still ways for people to purchase them illegally,” Wong said.

Wong added, everyone especially parents should play a big role in preventing such incidences from happening.

Yesterday Friends of PDRM had posted a picture of a four-year-old boy who reportedly sustained serious injuries on his left hand from playing with “A Boom” firecrackers with friends near his house.

The post also said the child had been sent to the Tg Sepat clinic before being sent to the Banting Hospital. The boy had reportedly been transferred to the Klang Hospital for further treatment.
