KUALA LUMPUR: National powerlifter Jong Yee Khie missed the gold medal at the 11th Fazza Dubai 2021 Para Powerlifting World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last night by a mere kilogram (kg).

After failing to lift 220kg in the first attempt of the men's above 107 kg category, the 31-year-old bounced back to lift 231kg to put him in the gold medal position.

In the final attempt, the hairstylist from Batu Kawa, Kuching, lifted a new personal best of 239 kg, but then was denied the gold by Russian Konstantin Matsnev, who lifted 240kg.

Jordan's Mutaz Al Juneidi settled for the bronze with a 217kg lift, in the event streamed live online.

However, the National Sports Council (NSC) via social media, confirmed that Yee Khie secured his Tokyo Paralympics berth as world number two through the silver medal feat.

Yee Khie, the men's heavyweight category silver medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, had his right leg amputated after being involved in a motorcycle race in 2005 in Kuching, Sarawak.

Yesterday, another national powerlifter, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, bagged the men's over-72kg category gold after breaking the world record with a 230kg lift, erasing the 229kg mark set by Iran's Roohallah Rostami at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Para Games in Indonesia.
