There is nothing more that makes a Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) student from Palestine happy other than being treated like a family member by the people of this country.
That was how Mohamed Elhalabi , 32, described his feeling this Ramadan, after staying in Malaysia for almost 10 years.
The postgraduate student who is doing a PhD in computer science said, he celebrates Ramadan here every year like in their own country, despite the fact that they had to be away from their loved ones.
“It is not much different actually. But in Palestine, it is more with family, family gathering and all. But Malaysians make us feel at home.
“I have been staying here for almost 9 and half years. All that we always feel is the sharing of love and support to Palestinians, especially in Ramadan and this Muslim season,” he said.
Commenting on his experience going through the fasting month in Malaysia compared to his own country, Mohamed Elhalabi noted, there is not much difference between the two countries, especially in terms of food.
He who is already married and has two children admitted missing his family in Palestine, especially his parents and siblings every time Ramadan comes.
Although he considers Malaysia his second home, deep down his heart, Mohamed Elhalabi still keeps the desire to return to his homeland after completing his study, if the situation permits.
“I wish to go back to Palestine of course. It is my country. I believe one day I’m going back to Palestine, but it depends on the situation.
“If it is not easy to go back, you know with the situation at the borders, the Egyptians and Israelis. If I have the opportunity to go back, I will go back.
“But, if I got something else to do in Malaysia, something good for my life, my future, something good for myself to support my family and my people back home, I will stay in Malaysia,” he said.
