Police have arrested a man who slit the throat of his three-year-old daughter and later attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the chest in Kampung Tengah Kodiang, here yesterday evening.

Kubang Pasu acting police chief ACP Abdul Rahim Abdullah said in the 5.30 pm incident, the suspect, aged 29, who is believed to be having mental problems, grabbed his daughter from the arm of his wife, also aged 29.

"His wife was with her mother outside the house when the suspect arrived at the house. Later the suspect grabbed the victim into the house and locked the front door.



"The grandmother later heard her granddaughter scream and when the suspect opened the door, she saw both the suspect and her granddaughter bleeding. The suspect and victim then collapsed at the front door," he said in a a statement.

He said the suspect's wife brought her daughter to the Kangar Hospital while the grandmother told a relative in Kampung Changkat Logan, Kodiang about the incident and left the suspect alone in the house.

Abdul Rahim said the girl who sustained seven-centimetre long and three-centimetre deep wound was however conscious and in stable condition.

Based on the report lodged by the wife at the Kodiang police station, police found the suspect lying in the living room with a stab wound on the left of the chest and a kitchen knife used to slit his daughter's throat in a bedroom, he said.

The suspect who was later taken to the Kangar Hospital is also reported to be stable condition.

Abdul Rahim said the wife told police her husband had been suffering depression for about a week and suffered loss of appetite apart from having a record for mental illness at the Kangar Hospital in Perlis.

He added that further investigations were ongoing.
