KEPALA BATAS: Police have arrested a man on suspicion of stabbing his mother with a knife when the victim was performing tarawih prayers at their house in Taman Orkid Permai, here, yesterday.

Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said police received a report regarding the incident at 10 pm from a man who claimed that his mother was stabbed by his older brother.

"Upon arrival at the house, the 29-year-old suspect was still there and police have detained him to assist with the investigation. The man is unemployed and tested positive for drugs but has no previous criminal records.

"Police also seized two knives from the suspect which are 31 and 27 centimetres long, with black plastic handle," he said when contacted today.

He said the 56-year-old victim suffered injuries at her left hand and had been taken to the Kepala Batas Hospital where she received ten stitches.

The police were made to understand that the victim was performing tarawih prayers with her husband in the living room when the suspect suddenly rushed out from his room towards his parents while holding two knives.

"The father managed to dodge (the knives) while the mother was injured due to being stabbed by her son, who was diagnosed with a mental health problem in 2016 and currently undergoing treatment," he said.
