The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has set up an internal cyber team to curb the involvement of its personnel in the ideology of the so-called IS militant group or Daish terrorists.

RMN Chief, Admiral Datuk Seri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin said the team was an initiative of the Navy to monitor its staff from getting involved in Daish-linked activities.

"The team comprises several Navy cyber experts. We are monitoring our personnel via their social websites... if there are elements in the dissemination of Daish ideology, the employee will be called for counselling," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after a 'Wearing of Ranks' ceremony for three RMN senior officers at KD Sri Gombak here yesterday.

They were Vice-Admiral Ahmad Abdullah who was promoted from Rear Admiral, while Rear Admiral Jamaluddin Mohd Saman was promoted from Captain, and Captain Badarudin Taha (from Commander).

Through the Religious Corps, Ahmad Kamarulzaman said the Navy would also hold roadshows at RMN bases nationwide to brief its personnel on the dangers of Daish ideology.

In another development, Ahmad Kamarulzaman refuted reports in recent social media that a foreign ship intruded into the waters off Bintulu, Sarawak.

"The presence of a foreign ship in the country's Exclusive Economic Zone, 200 nautical miles from our national waters is a normal route and is no cause for worry," he said.
