Police arrested an Indian national in connection with RM135,000 (in cash) reported stolen from a car during an accident in front of a hypermarket here last Saturday.

Selangor CID chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the 39-year-old man, who is a driver of a licensed money changer company in Lebuh Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, was arrested after police found that he had given contradicting statements.

He said the man claimed to have parked his car in front of the hypermarket while two other workers of the money changer company entered the premises to make some business transactions.

"The driver said he stayed in the car with several bags containing the money meant for distribution to several of the company's branches. He then claimed that a car stopped in front of him before going astern and crashed into his car.

"He said when he got out to see the damage on the car, the other driver sped away," Mohd Adnan told a press conference here today.

Mohd Adnan said when the man got back into the car, the bags containing the money were gone.

He said police had remanded the man for 14 days to facilitate further investigation into the case and were in the midst of studying the footage from the closed-circuit television cameras to verify the statements.

Meanwhile, Mohd Adnan said police arrested two Algerian men in connection with the theft of a luggage belonging to a businessman from Sabah at the KL International Airport on Nov 10.

In the 11.20am incident, the duo were caught only minutes after stealing the luggage in front of a restaurant at the airport.

Initial investigation found that the suspects, aged 48 and 36, had entered the country as tourists in early September.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code.
