A Form Two student lost his index and middle fingers when the a bottle-type firecracker he tried to ignite, exploded in his hand.

Mohd Idham Shafiq Mohd Tahar, 14, is the first victim in incidents involving firecrackers reported in Kelantan this year.

His grandfather, Mohd Rasid Ibrahim, 59, said in the incident occurred at 2pm in Kampung Luar Gual Periuk, Rantau Panjang last Friday.

"I have advised him not to play with firecrackers, but he kept doing so behind my back.

"Due to the explosion, he also sustained minor burn injury on his cheek," he told reporters when met after visiting his grandson at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital here today.

Meanwhile, Kelantan police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim, who also visited the victim today, said this was the first case in Kelantan this year.

"I would like to advise the people not to play firecrackers because they can cause injuries and even death.

"It is also an offence under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957," he said, adding that public with information about such activity or traders selling firecrackers were advised to channel the information to the police to enable further action to be taken.
