The driver of a car slashed and severely injured the driver of another when the latter honked after the first car overtook the second dangerously here yesterday, police said today.

Terengganu CID Chief ACP Wan Abd Aziz Wan Hamzah said the incident happened at Jalan Buluh Gading at about 3.30pm when the 42-year-old victim was travelling with his wife and two children in a Honda City car from Kemaman to Besut to visit relatives.

A Perodua Kancil car with two men in it overtook the Honda City car dangerously and the annoyed victim honked, prompting the driver of the other car to stop and emerge from the vehicle carrying a machete.

"The victim also emerged from his vehicle and engaged in a struggle and ran into some bushes by the road pursued by his assailant," he said in a statement.

Wan Abd Aziz said passersby rushed to help the victim and the assailant drove off towards Batu Enam.

The victim was slashed on the left arm and head, he said, adding that passersby summoned an ambulance and patrolling policemen.

He said police knew the identity of the assailant, who was in his 20s, and had launched a hunt for him.

Passersby found the handphone of the assailant at the scene and handed it over to the police, he added.
