The High Court here allowed the appeal by a police corporal to set aside his nine days jail sentence for beating up his wife, and let him off with a RM1,000 fine or one month imprisonment.

But justice Datuk Azman Abdullah also admonished Mohd Hafizam Ahmad, 31, for committing domestic violence.

"You are a policeman, yet your character at work differs from your character at home. A husband is supposed to protect his wife, not hurt her.

"What you have done cannot be taken lightly as it can have tragic consequences. It will then be too late ...Many wives end up dead and so on.

"For whatever reason, you cannot take matters into your own hands," said the judge.

Azman had granted the policeman's appeal to set aside the custodial sentence imposed by the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court after considering that he was still living with his wife and their two children.

Mohd Hafizam committed the offence on Mutiary Binawati Mohd Sharif, 38, a civil servant, inside a car at Block D9, Complex D, Government Administrative Centre in Putrajaya here at 10.10pm on June 16, last year.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Izzat Fauzan appeared for the prosecution while counsel A. Kailashii Vasudevan represented the accused. --Bernama
