Any vehicles used as a taxi which collect fares from the public must be in accordance with the law as stipulated in the 2010 Land Public Transport Act even though it is for charity drive.

In reference to Uber and Volkswagen Malaysia's Charity Drive with the Stars in the Klang Valley on Friday, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) in a statement said the drivers must have the required Public Service License (PSV).

"The vehicles also must be registered with SPAD with proper insurance coverage for the protection of fare paying passengers.

"SPAD welcomes the noble intentions of this charitable drive, however all parties must verify with SPAD to determine the legality of such programmes which involved any use of land public transport," according to the statement.

The one-day "Uber Volkswagen Charity Drive With The Stars" is organised by Volkswagen and Uber apps, involving local celebrities volunteering to drive and give passengers a star-studded experience.

The total donation collected by each of these celebrity drivers will then be matched by both Uber and Volkswagen and be donated to their selected charities – bringing an extra dose of joy to those in need during the festive period.

The celebrities involved in the initiative include Sazzy Falak, Ean Nasrun and Jinnyboy, Afdlin Shauki, Joyce Wong, Yasmin Hani, Lisa Surihani, Dynas Mokhtar, Sheena Liam, Reshmonu, Phat Fabes, JJ – Red FM, Moots Shuvit and Sarah Lian.
