KUALA LUMPUR:Five Bangladeshi contract workers were trapped for almost two hours on the 30th floor of Menara Tradewinds on Jalan Raja Laut.

The fire had started on the 27th floor before spreading to the 29th floor of the building.

“The department received a distress call at 4.46pm and the first fire engines to the scene came from the Titiwangsa fire station,” said Fire Personnel Farid Norizam Jafri to Astro AWANI.

Meanwhile Titiwangsa Fire and Rescue Department deputy chief Imam Bukhari Susam said firefighters were still battling the blaze at 10.30pm Wednesday.

“The fire had spread to the 30th floor. Fire fighters had faced problems in obtaining water supply to douse the flames and this is the main cause why they are taking so long to put out the fire,” he told Astro AWANI.

According to a Bernama report, the five Bangladeshi workers rescued are in stable condition. They are currently being treated for smoke inhalation.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Operations assistant director Azizan Ismail said they received a call at 4.47pm and 12 engines with 70 firemen were rushed to the scene.

“All victims in their 20s were trapped on the 30th floor as the 27th to 29th floor of the building were on fire but they were rescued and are in stable condition,” he said.

He said initial investigations found the fire could have started from the air-conditioning duct on the 27th floor of the 36-storey building.
