PUTRAJAYA: A total of 45 individuals comprising deputy secretaries-general of ministries and deputy directors of agencies have been appointed as Gender Focal Points (GFP) in an effort to mainstream gender in every government planning, policy implementation and initiative.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun said the appointment was made because they have the capacity to make decisions in every policy and programme in their respective ministries and agencies.

"The appointed GFP will lead the Gender Focal Team (GFT) in each ministry and agency.

"This GFP will have at least seven members to ensure that gender elements are taken into account in the development of every government policy and programme," she said in a statement today.

On Aug 25, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government had agreed to appoint GFP and create GFT in each ministry and agency to explore the potential of women in the economy.

Rina said the appointment of GFP and the creation of GFT could contribute to better governance of the organisation and the country with equitable distribution of resources in meeting the different needs of women and men.

"GFP and GFT will support the government's aspirations based on understanding, capacity and capability related to gender in an effort to realise the National Women's Policy.

"They will also help increase awareness and understanding related to gender in their respective ministries and agencies," she said.
