Twenty-four of 62 Malaysian students sheltered at the Malaysia Hall in Central Jakarta have been allowed to return to Tomang and Roxy in West Jakarta after floods in their areas receded.

Education Malaysia director Assoc Prof Dr Juzhar Jusoh said they were given the green light after checks were carried out in the areas where they were accommodated.

"If their areas are flooded again, they can come back to the Malaysia Hall to seek refuge," he said when contacted.

Dr Juzhar said the students, who were pursuing their studies at Trisakti University were not actually affected by floods, but access roads to their homes were flooded, thus they had to be evacuated.

On the remaining 38 students at the Malaysia Hall, he said they would be allowed to return home if the flood situation in their areas return to normal.

Dr Juzhar said Trisakti University in West Jakarta, which was inundated, declared a one-week holiday and would be reopen on Jan 28.

Floods, which hit Jakarta on Tuesday, had so far claimed 19 lives, some of the victims died of electrocution at their homes.
