Three Nepali women climbed Mount K2, the world’s second tallest mountain, on July 26 and made it public in a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday.

The Nepali women, who reached atop the 8,611 metre high Mount K2, are Maya Sherpa, Dawa Yangzum Sherpa and Pasang Shrepa, leader of the expedition said at the press conference.

They are the first Nepali women to climb Mount K2 located in Pakistan, which is considered one the world’s most difficult peaks to climb.

“We knew the risk but we were determined to face the challenge that finally paid well” said Maya Shrepa, leader of the expedition.

“We made it to the peak on our first attempt,” she said, adding that the objectives of their expedition were to show the world the courage of Nepali women and also to generate awareness on climate change.

The slogan of the Nepali Women’s Mount K2 Expedition was `Women Climbing for Climate Change Awareness.´

They stayed ten minutes atop the peak and soon started to descend as weather condition was harsh, she said.

The Nepali team had set out for Pakistan on June 19 to climb the mountain.
