A grenade blast at a prison in central Venezuela left one inmate dead and 22 others injured, the Interior ministry said Wednesday.

The explosion jolted the facility in San Juan de los Morros, Guarico state on visiting day.

Six family members of inmates also were hurt, the ministry said.

Venezuela, which is mired in twin economic and political crises marked by severe shortages and violent crime, has seen a series of grenade attacks in recent months.

About a dozen such attacks have occurred at military bases, police stations, prisons and a newspaper since mid-2015.
