A moderate earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale, hit the Minahassa Peninsula in Sulawesi, Indonesia, at 5.51am today.

In a statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported that the epicentre of the quake was 68km southwest of Gorontalo, Indonesia, and 707km southeast of Semporna, Sabah.

The authorities did not issue any warning of a tsunami threat, it added.
