The Chinese Embassy in India on Thursday confirmed a Chinese woman was raped in the Indian capital earlier this week, Xinhua news agency reported.

The embassy has made official contacts with the Indian police and Ministry of External Affairs after the news broke out in the local media that a young Chinese woman was raped by an Indian man in Delhi this week, sources said.

The embassy has expressed shock and anger over the incident and has urged the Indian government to seriously deal with the incident, protect the security, legal rights and privacy of the rape victim, and to arrest and punish the rapist.

It also urged the Indian authorities to take all efficient measures to protect Chinese citizens in India and prevent similar incidents from happening.

The Indian side said it was seriously looking into the incident and police said they have arrested the suspect and were collecting evidence before sending him to court.

The Chinese embassy in India has urged Chinese citizens in India, especially women, to remain alert over their personal security, avoid leaving their house alone and shun insecure places.

India is known for rampant rapes against women and Delhi is called "rape capital of the world".

A 23-year-old Indian woman died in hospital two weeks after being brutally raped by six thugs on a moving bus in Delhi last December, an incident that has shocked the world.

Rapes are being reported on a daily basis in India.
