The number of companies registered for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) stood at 129,822 as of Nov 7, an increase of 2,055 from the previous day, said the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

The department said the data showed a continuing rise in the number of companies registering for the GST.

The government's target is to get 140,000 companies to register before the Dec 31 deadline under the new tax structure to be implemented on April 1, 2015.

Meanwhile, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said on average, about 2,200 companies have been registering for the GST each week.

Speaking at a radio interview, he said the government would continue to explain the mechanism and correct public misconception about the GST.
