Ismail Sabri said that the voting age for Malaysians will be lowered from 21 to 18 starting Jan 1 next year.

Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said the move was necessary to recognise the role and involvement of youth in politics.

The voting age for Malaysians has been lowered from 21 to 18 after the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019 was passed by the Dewan Rakyat on July 16, 2019.

The automatic voter registration and Undi18 (lowering of voting age to 18) can only be implemented after Sept 1, 2022 due to various constraints and issues.

Reezal said the EC should explain the situation because the policy to lower the voting age to 18 is already at the implementation stage.

The implementation of the 18-year-old voting age and automatic voter registration is expected to commence at the latest by July next year.
