MOTAC has not received any reports on cases of fraudulent haj by proxy (badal haji) services involving haj and umrah travel agencies thus far, said its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

A payment of RM1,671 each for pilgrims who had to cancel their umrah travel following the month-long temporary postponement, will be made on Feb 18.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, at the special meeting, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin will table a detailed report on the issue.

The Health Ministry wants to avoid the health system from crippling through a strategy to slow down the Omicron variant.

There are concerns that non-compliance with home quarantine procedures among returning pilgrims had caused the spread of the new variant.

The MOH is of the view that it was still too early to impose a travel ban for the Umrah pilgrimage in Mecca following an increase in Omicron variant cases.

Travel agencies that offer umrah packages have been urged to immediately return payments collected from customers who cannot perform umrah last year.
