#KiniNews: PM announces MCO for six states from Jan 13

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today unveiled tougher measures to control the spread of Covid-19, this includes the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in six states - Penang, Selangor, Federal Territories (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan), Melaka, Johor and Sabah - for 14 days, from Wednesday until January 26.

Another six states - Pahang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan - will be under the ongoing conditional MCO.

The Recovery MCO will be enforced in Perlis and Sarawak for the same period.

Malaysia today recorded seven new Covid-19 cases, the lowest in three months.

It is also the first time the country recorded only a single-digit increase in new cases since March 12.

The last time the country recorded seven or fewer cases was on March 8, before the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) which only came into effect on March 18.

#KiniNews: New Covid-19 cluster emerges, 34 new cases at immigration depot

A new cluster of positive Covid-19 cases has been detected at the Bukit Jalil immigration depot in Kuala Lumpur.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this was after 34 new cases were detected at the centre in the past 24 hours alone, bringing the total number of positive coronavirus cases there to 35.

However, Noor Hisham today informed that all 34 individuals found to be infected had been housed at the detention centre since before the start of the movement control order (MCO) on March 18.

Earlier today, a single mother reportedly complained about being slapped with a one-month jail term while Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's daughter Nurulhidayah was only given a RM800 fine.

The single mother's sentence was reduced to a fine of RM1,000 after appeal but she had already spent eight days in prison.

The daughter of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Nurulhidayah, was fined RM800 by the Magistrate's Court in Putrajaya today for violating the movement control order (MCO) last month.

Her husband Saiful Nizam was also fined RM800.

Magistrate Shah Wirah Abdul Halim meted out the sentences after the two pleaded guilty to charges of breaching Section 3(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.

In a separate development, Senior Minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government will no longer enforce the 10pm to 6am curfew or inter-district travel restrictions.

The government made the decision to reopen businesses on Monday to prevent economic losses of close to RM100 billion.

In a live address, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the country has already lost up to RM63 billion for the duration of the movement control order (MCO) since it began on March 18.

Even so, he said the government was aware of concerns that the easing of the MCO might undo the country’s efforts in containing the COVID-19 spread and cause a new wave of infections.

#KiniNews: M'sia reports 36 new cases, S'pore sees spike with 1,426

Malaysia today recorded 36 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest single-day increase since the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) on March 18.

Meanwhile, Singapore reported 1,426 new cases on Monday.

This would make it the country’s biggest single day jump since the heath crisis began in January.

This brings the total number of cases in Singapore to over 8,000.

#KiniNews: Additional sectors must follow strict guidelines, says Azmin

The Cabinet has decided to allow several additional economic sectors to operate in phases during the movement control order (MCO), which has been extended until April 28, on the condition that they adhere to strict health and safety guidelines.

International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali said  that companies listed in the additional sectors will have to submit their application to MITI and must comply with procedures that have been set for their respective industries.

He also said all workers of companies allowed to operate during the MCO period must be screened for COVID-19.

#KiniNews: SPM postponed to 2021, UPSR and PT3 cancelled

The Education Ministry today announced that Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) are cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Education Minister Radzi Jidin at a press conference in Putrajaya also said all secondary school examinations will be postponed to next year.

Radzi said the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM) and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) will be postponed to the first quarter of 2021.

Meanwhile, Malaysia reported the lowest number of new Covid-19 cases in a day since the movement control order (MCO) began with 85 new infections.
