The court ruling comes five years after a historic 2018 judgement when the Supreme Court scrapped a colonial-era ban on gay sex.

Only Taiwan and Nepal allow same-sex unions in Asia, where largely conservative values still dominate politics and society.

Taiwan was the first in Asia to recognise such unions, while same-sex acts are illegal in some countries, such as Malaysia.

Existing same-sex marriages registered abroad will be immediately recognised while other couples can now submit their intention to marry.
