The quarantine period for travellers returning from overseas and close contacts of positive cases will be shortened from 14 to 10 days effective tomorrow (Dec 14).

The government has made it compulsory for anyone returning to Malaysia from overseas to undergo a compulsory quarantine procedure for 14 days at designated quarantine stations.

It was due to the issue of a long queue for those returning from overseas to take the swab test at the airport.

Under the National Security Council (NSC) rules, only Malaysians returning from overseas were required to go for compulsory quarantine.

In total, 30,315 Malaysians returning from overseas have been quarantined since April 3.

He said it also reflected the government's actions to quarantine those returning from overseas was the right move.

He said from the total, 7,910 individuals had their samples taken since April 3.

The situation has become more worrying now after more than 172 countries clamped down on overseas travels.

The two most prevalent clusters at the moment involved the tabligh congregants and Malaysians returning from overseas.

Malaysians returning from overseas and any individuals entering the country are required to undergo quarantine starting tomorrow.

All Malaysians returning from overseas will be quarantined for 14 days at a specific place to be provided by the government starting this Friday.

Malaysians returning from overseas would also have to undergo voluntary quarantine for 14 days.

Canada said it will try to catch suspected fraudsters, "terrorists" and Canadian jihadists returning from overseas conflicts by photographing and fingerprinting them.
