The number of new cases of COVID-19 in Malaysia continues to show a decrease with 1,483 cases reported Sunday compared to 1,971 on Saturday.

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Malaysia for the 18th epidemiological week (ME18) from May 1 to 7 dropped 58.3 pct to 8,732 cases from 20,937 cases the week before.

A total of 15,893 COVID-19 recovery cases were reported yesterday, which is higher than the number of new cases detected for the day, which was 10,052.

S.Korea leads the world's daily average number of new cases logged, accounting for one in every four infections reported globally each day.

The Health Ministry wants to see the outcome of the conditional movement control order (CMCO) first before advising Putrajaya on reopening more economic sectors.

Its director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said they are monitoring the situation and would be able to tell in two weeks' time.

"We have given relaxation through the conditional MCO which started on May 4, and hopefully in two weeks, we will monitor the progress to see if there is an increase in the number of new cases or otherwise.

"Before more economic sectors can be reopened, especially those like hair styling services, we need to monitor the situation before advising the prime minister," he told a press conference in Putrajaya.

Malaysia has reported more recoveries in the past 24 hours than new COVID-19 cases.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 166 recoveries were recorded, while the number of new cases detected stood at 156.

This puts the total number of cases at 4,119, with 2,567 of those cases still active.

Two new deaths were also reported, bringing the death toll to 65.

There have been 4,189 arrests and 1,449 charges made for violating the movement control order (MCO), since it started on March 18.

On Monday, 742 people were detained, 583 on Tuesday, and 562 yesterday.

Meanwhile, the country recorded 208 new infections as of noon today, said Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This is the second time the number of new cases has exceeded 200 and is the second-highest increase to date.

The daily number of COVID-19 recovery cases of 31,234 reported yesterday, exceeds the number of new cases for the day, which was 26,534.

South East Asia and Oceania saw the biggest spike in the number of new cases this week.

The number of COVID-19 new daily cases breached the 5,000 mark for two consecutive days when 5,736 cases were reported today compared to 5,566 cases yesterday.

The number of COVID-19 new daily cases in the country dropped to 4,915 today, after recording more than 5,000 for three consecutive days, bringing the cumulative figure to 2,865,984 as at noon.

The number of new COVID-19 cases increased today to 3,270, compared to 2,842 cases yesterday, bringing the cumulative number of cases to 2,773,156.

The number of daily COVID-19 infections in the country has dipped below 5,000 again, with 4,896 new cases recorded today.

The number of recoveries from COVID-19 today has exceeded the number of new cases for two consecutive days in which 22,970 cases of recoveries were reported compared to 17,577 new infections.

The number of new cases had brought the total number to 1,919,774.
