Hsien Loong today announced that starting in November, Muslim nurses in the public healthcare sector in the republic will be allowed to wear a 'tudung' (hijab) with their uniforms.

He discussed the government's deliberations on allowing its Muslim nurses to wear the tudung, with the country's Malay/Muslim religious and community leaders in a 'candid, lively and sincere' manner.

It is compulsory for all Muslim nurses to cover their 'aurat', even in private hospitals, the ministry says.

A nurse from a private hospital was terminated because of disciplinary problems, and not because of her long-sleeved uniform, says the hospital.

The JAKIM and the Health Ministry have been urged to issue guidelines on uniform for Muslim nurses at government and private hospitals.
