Thailand plans to relist cannabis as a narcotic and issue permits only to those who grow and use it for medical purposes and research.

PM Anwar Ibrahim said the government has not decided on whether to legalise the use of cannabis for medical purposes in the country.

The government will take a stand on the use of cannabis for medical purposes before the end of the year, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Khairy is on a four-day working visit to Thailand today to assess the potential use of cannabis and ketum for medical purposes and the legal framework for its medical use.

Thailand is the first Asian nation to decriminalise cultivation of marijuana and its consumption in food and drink for medical purposes.

The main committee for the development of the cannabis and ketum industry has been set up to look at the latest evidence on the use of the substances, especially for medical purposes.

Malaysia should play a serious role and take progressive actions to allow the use of cannabis and hemp, especially cannabidiol (CBD) for medical purposes, said Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi.

Applications for the use of cannabis for medical purposes can be submitted to the DCA for evaluation and registration if there is sufficient scientific evidence for it to be marketed.

The Health Ministry has stressed that no one is allowed to sell controlled drugs online even for medical purposes.
