The number of domestic violence cases across the country dropped to 576 between January and April, this year from 627 during the same period, last year.

Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said that 951 cases were recorded in 2018 and 1,159 in 2019.

The rate of domestic violence in Selangor had gone up during the implementation of the Movement Control Order in March and April.

The Women and Family Development Ministry (KPWKM) has refuted an article on a rise in domestic violence recorded via the ministry's helpline, Talian Kasih.

The number comprised domestic violence cases and criminal cases under the Penal Code involving women as victims such as cases of molestation, incest, rape and unnatural offences.

A total of 4,000 cases of domestic violence were reported nationwide from January until October this year.

Among the contributing factors for the increase were economic problems at home, depression involving husband or wife, as well as the mechanisms in fulfilling family responsibility such as child care.

Domestic violence cases nationwide dropped by 11 per cent this year, said the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry's women's development department deputy DG, Che Azizah Che Rashid.

Domestic violence cases increased 43.6 per cent from January to September this year compared to 2013, with 3673 cases reported.

Police statistics show that only 2,229 domestic violence cases were reported from January until September this year, from 2,558 cases in 2012.
