Malaysia's gross domestic product for the second quarter (Q2) contracted by 17.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

This is the first time quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) change is in the negative territory since Q3 2009 (-1.1 percent).

According to Reuters, this is the worst slump since the Asia financial crisis which saw GDP shrink by 11.2 percent in Q4 of 1998.
