KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's young shuttlers aged 21 and below, claimed three titles at the 2021 Polish Open held in Gniezno, winning the men's singles, mixed doubles and men's doubles events, today.
Ng Tze Yong, 20, stunned second seed and 35-year-old Pablo Abian of Spain 21-19, 21-11 after a 52- minute battle for the men's singles title in the lower tier tournament.
Pablo was the winner in 2010 and 2011, while Tze Yong is only the third Malaysian to win the men's singles title after Liew Daren (2015) and Tan Jia Wei (2017) in the tournament's 46-year history.
It is also the world number 136's second title after having won at the 2019 South Australia International.
Meanwhile, Choong Hon Jian-Toh Ee Wei, both 20, emerged victorious in the mixed doubles event, beating Switzerland's Nicolas A. Mueller-Ronjan Stern 21-16, 21-12.
The men's doubles title decider between the all-Malaysian finalists saw Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun better Chang Yee Jun-Chia Wei Jie 21-17, 20-22, 21-19 in a 49-minute fight.
The success of Wei Chong, 21, and Kai Wun, 20, also ended the country's two-decade drought in the men's doubles event, only won by Chang Kim Wai-Hong Chieng Hun in 2000.
