TOKYO: National sailors Nuraisyah Jamil and Juni Karimah Noor Jamali seem to have learned their lesson from the opening day by producing a better start on day two of the women's International 470 event here today.
National coach Muhammad Sahir A Rahim was pleased with their better start although they still ended the second day of the sailing action in 18th place in Race Three and 20th in Race 4 at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour, about 70 kilometres from here.
"Yesterday, Nuraisyah and Juni were left behind at the starting line but, today, they managed to overcome that weakness," he said when contacted by Bernama, adding that the wind speed of 18 knots and the two-metre high waves also contributed to their poor performance today.
The Malaysians, who are making their Olympic debut, now have 52 net points after four races while Polish sailors Agnieszka Skrzypulec-Jolanta Ogar lead the standings with four net points.
Meanwhile, Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy, who is competing in the men's Laser Standard event, ended Race Seven in 26th spot before dropping two spots to 28th in Race Eight today.
huyuzKhairulnizam is now 27th out of 35 sailors with 153 net points, with Australian Matt Wearn leading the charge with 29 net points after eight races.
Another national sailor, Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif, meanwhile, found herself ending up in 28th spot in Race Seven of the women's Laser Radial event before dropping two spots to 30th in Race Eight.
Nur Shazrin now has 163 net points to be placed 28th out of 44 sailors while Dane Anne-Marie Rindom leads the standings with 25 net points.
All three events will continue on Friday (July 30).
