Police have issued a strong warning to football supporters not to bring prohibited items such as flares and dangerous weapons during the Sultan of Selangor's Cup football match at the Shah Alam Stadium this Saturday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, who is also a committee member of the Sultan of Selangor's Cup said football fans should behave themselves to project an image of dedicated and disciplined supporters during the match.

"This match involves players from Singapore, and maybe viewed by football enthusiasts abroad. By displaying a good and positive image, it will give a positive effect to the country's image.

"Police will not compromise with any quarters who try to incite provocations during the match," he said at a special media conference on the Sultan of Selangor's Cup which entered its 14th edition here Monday.

Khalid said the presence of police would be beefed up during the match between Selangor Selection and Singapore Selection as well as the match between veteran teams of both countries as the curtain raiser.

He also reminded football fans to be present at the stadium early to avoid traffic congestion along the way to the stadium, besides adhering to police instructions when parking their vehicles.

Meanwhile, Sultan of Selangor's Cup committee chairman, Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said the organiser was expecting 28 buses of football fans from Singapore for the match.

For the record, Selangor Selection had emerged champions seven times in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014 while Singapore Selection were champions in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The Sultan of Selangor's Cup was mooted by the Selangor Sultan, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, involving selection and veteran teams of Selangor and Singapore, with the aim to strengthen the relations between the two sides.

The Sultan is also the patron of the championships introduced since 2001 when it was known as the Acting Ruler of Selangor's Cup.
