Malaysia's hope of making the 2015 Asian Cup final round was dashed after a 0-1 loss to Qatar in a Group D match at Shah Alam Stadium last night.
The win enabled the Qatar to join Bahrain and 16 other teams in the final round to be held in Australia in 2015.
Qatar started strongly by making several raids but found the Malaysian defence led by Mohamad Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak hard to crack.
Malaysia too had chances via skipper Safiq Rahim in the 26th minute but his shot went over the crossbar.
Safiq went close in the the 29th minute but his free kick was punched out by Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb.
Malaysia's complacency was punished in the 64th minute when Qatar striker Al-Ali beat goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.
Stung, Malaysia launched several raids but failed to find the net until referee Kim Sang Woo blew the final whistle.
About 1,000 fans known as Ultras Malaysia created havoc in protest against the failings by the the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
Malaysia's final match will be against Yemen in March at a venue to be determined by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
