Six Pahang supporters were detained on suspicion of causing disturbance after the Malaysia Cup match between Pahang and Kuala Lumpur ended at the Darul Makmur Stadium here last night.
Kuantan police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Salleh said they were believed to have acted aggressively and were detained to facilitate investigations.
"They were arrested more as a preventive measure. We want to find out if they were under the influence of drugs," he told reporters.
Abdul Aziz said some Pahang supporters hurled smoke bombs on to the pitch around the 80th minute of the match, forcing the referee to halt play for a few minutes until the smoke dissipated.
He said there was also a disturbance after the match, believed to be fans wanting Pahang coach Razif Ismail to step down and that police took about 15 minutes to bring the situation under control.
In the match, The Elephants edged Kuala Lumpur 2-1 with Claudio Andres Meneses and Jailton De Campos on target for the east coast side in the 29th and 63th minutes while Leonardo Moreira scored the city side's goal inthe 46th minute.
Pahang, however, failed to make the next round, the quarter-finals, despite the win.
