UBON RATCHATHANI (Thailand): Malaysia emerged overall champions in the ASEAN University Games (AUG) chess competition by making a clean sweep of all the four golds at stake today.

In the tournament held at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University, Rohan Shan Tze Navaratnam snatched the first gold when he beat teammate Aminuddin Muhd Faqih in the men's individual final.

Tan Li Ting then contributed the second gold, in the women's individual, when she beat Chua Jia Tien in another all-Malaysian final.

The chess camp grabbed two more golds in the men's and women's team events.

National team coach Ezmi Mahmood said his charges performed well through hard work and a high level of focus.


"Alhamdulillah since the preliminary round we have been confident of winning golds," he said.

In the silat competition, Nur Adilah Mohamad Zamri won gold in the silat olahraga Class D Putri after defeating Thailand's Rutrawee Uttamasrikhan.

The national rowing team also won a gold through Mohammad Amirul Norhadi in the lightweight men's single sculls event held in Sisaket.

The national contingent have so far won 42 golds in the 20th AUG.
