KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has revealed that the formation of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government was based on a majority of just one vote.
The UMNO president said that at the time of its formation, the PN government was only supported by 113 members of Parliament (MPs) when it would need at least 112 MPs to form a government.
"It means the advantage of one seat while a Member of Parliament from UMNO, Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has never signed any pledge to support the current Prime Minister," he said in a heart-to-heart interview with the UMNO president posted on Malaysiaport on Sunday.
The MP for Bagan Datuk explained that in the formation, a total of 43 MPs from UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) as well as 18 MPs from PAS had agreed to nominate Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who had left Pakatan Harapan (PH) at that time, as prime minister.
"(This) was joined by 15 political migrants from UMNO as well as from a party that was formerly in PH, which finally with the support of 61 MPs from Muafakat Nasional, was able to form the current government," he said.
Therefore, Ahmad Zahid said, the people should know how UMNO and BN sacrificed in creating the current government.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid also commented on the statement made by some parties that UMNO and BN should be grateful and thankful for the party's participation in the current government.
"With this support of 43, of course we should know who should be grateful, who should be thankful for the formation of the current government," he said.
