KUALA LUMPUR : Member of Parliament (MP) for Rembau Khairy Jamaluddin has urged UMNO MPs to state their stance following a letter claiming that the party's president gave his support to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the new prime ministerial candidate, being spread on social media.
Khairy in an update on Instagram Story said, if the letter is true, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did not inform him at all about the matter.
"If the letter is true, I want to categorically state that my party president does not speak for me.
"I am not supporting Anwar Ibrahim to become PM.
"I hope other UMNO MPs will make their positions clear. Let's see then who has the numbers (majority support)," he said in the entry on Saturday.
Earlier, a letter dated October 11, 2020, which was allegedly sent by Ahmad Zahid himself to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, had gone viral on social media.
The Bagan Datuk Member of Parliament in the letter said that the support was also supported by UMNO MPs.
Apart from the name and signature of Ahmad Zahid as the sender, the letter was also seen to have the signature of Pekan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as a witness to the declaration.
However, UMNO in a statement today vehemently denied the contagious letter.
