KUALA LUMPUR: “I was awaken from sleep by a loud thundering noise and tremor like that of an earthquake,” said an occupant on the first floor of a three-storey apartment at Persiaran Syed Putra here where a landslide occurred two days ago.
Requesting to be identified only as Sarah, 16, the girl said she had fallen asleep on the sofa in the living room of the apartment unit while watching television.
“I panicked and ran to my mother’s room. During that chaotic situation, my mother looked out of the window and saw the erosion at the earth embankment,” she told Bernama at the scene.
She said it was about 9.45 pm and when she went out of the house, found the compound filled with mud.
Another victim, Raymond Lee, 45, who has checked his family into a hotel, said the last time a landslide occurred at the apartment was 10 years ago.
“The situation then was not as bad as this time around when I can feel the house shaking. It (landslide) occurred because the soil embankment was weak and waiting to collapse because no attention was given to it by the authorities,” he added.
Meanwhile, the police have cordoned off the area.
A Bernama report yesterday stated that 11 occupants of the three-storey apartment had a terrifying experience when the earth embankment near their residence collapsed following heavy rain.
Following which, they were advised to vacate their homes after an inspection by the Kuala Lumpur City hall found that it was no longer safe for them to stay there.
