Teen pleads guilty to abandoning newborn in toilet

A salesgirl pleaded guilty at the Ampang Magistrates Court here today to abandoning her newborn baby in the toilet of the pharmacy where she worked, last week.
The 18-year-old girl from Pasir Mas, Kelantan is accused of concealing the delivery and secretly abandoning her baby in the toilet of Guardian Retail Vision GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd, Taman Melawati, Ampang Jaya at 4pm on May 2.
She was charged under Section 318 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum of two years imprisonment, fine or both, upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the other pharmacy staff discovered the lifeless body of the baby on the toilet bowl.
After repeated questioning the accused admitted that she was the one who had delivered the baby.
The girl was then taken to the Ampang Hospital for an examination and was arrested on May 3.
Magistrate Noor Farah Hazwani Osman fixed July 16 for re-mention pending a character report on the accused from the Social Welfare Department.
She was also allowed bail at RM8,000 with one surety and ordered to report at the nearest police station once a week until sentencing.
