Teen in motorcycle convoy dies in accident

One of six youths riding a motorcycle each at the North-South Expressway early today, was tossed into the air like a rag doll when his machine was rammed from behind by a speeding car.

As Mohamad Asmawi Hamdan, 18, fell, he was once again hit by the same car which dragged him for about 50m at the south-bound 262.8km stretch of the expressway.

He died on the spot in the 1am crash. He sustained head and body injuries.

One of the motorcyclists, Mohd Aid Aidil Salihin, 19, related the pain and trauma he underwent when watching his friend, Mohamad Asmawi, die in a gruesome manner.

He said the six were on their way from Seremban to Senawang when the mishap occurred.

"We were riding separately on our motorcycles and were in the middle lane to overtake a lorry when all of a sudden, a white Proton Preve came from behind and struck Mohamad Asnawi who was riding alongside me.

"Everything happened so fast and I could only watch the accident horror helplessly as my friend was tossed in the air and again hit by the same car, killing him on the spot," he told Bernama at the scene.

Mohd Aid said he and the other motorcyclists carried the victim's body from the middle of the road to the road-shoulder.

"The situation became more sorrowful when Mohd Asmawi's parents arrived at the scene and wept uncontrollably, upon seeing the condition of the body," he added.

He said the victim, who was third of four siblings, had passed the selection process as a recruit and was scheduled to register as a trainee at the Army Basic Training Centre, Port Dickson next month.

State traffic police chief, Supt Abdul Aziz Ali when contacted, confirmed the accident.

Mohd Asmawi's body was sent to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital.
