Teach unity in secondary schools - Dr Subramaniam

The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) has proposed that the Ministry of Education the education modules for secondary schools (SMK) in an effort to strengthen solidarity among students of different races and religions.

MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said this was because almost one hundred per cent of Tamil school students continued their education in secondary schools which were seen as the most appropriate place to foster unity among students from the various school systems.

"We want the Education Ministry to focus on secondary schools as a platform to strengthen relationship between high school students," he told reporters after visiting Sungai Renggam National Type Tamil Schools (SJKT) here, on Wednesday.

Dr Subramaniam, the Health Minister, also opposed any attempt to abolish in the country as the schools were not an obstacle to unity.

As such, he proposed that the spirit of patriotism and nationalism be inculcated among students through the education modules and curriculum to develop awareness on the importance of unity.

On his visit to SJKT Sungai Renggam here, Dr Subramaniam said the school was given an allocation of RM2.836 million for the construction of three additional blocks to accommodate a total of 897 students from the surrounding areas.
