More than half a million identity cards were reported to be lost just this year alone, with the numbers being on a steady increase since 2010.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Jaafar told the Dewan Rakyat today that the MyKad were lost to snatch thefts, negligence and also did not rule out incidences of the cards being sold to syndicates.
He said in 2010, a total of 397,079 cards were reported missing and the number rose to 413,068 in 2011 while in 2012 the total number of lost MyKad stood at 429,137.
This year, as of Oct 31, a total of 565,157 identity cards were reported missing.
Wan Junaidi said his ministry had proposed a drastic plan to look into the issue of missing identity cards.
However, since the plan would have legal implications, the ministry is waiting for feedbacks from the Attorney General’s office before it can be unveiled.
