Former vice presiden Datuk S.Sothinathan made a political comeback in the party when he won the MIC vice president post today.
Sothinathan, who was the former Teluk Kemang member of Parliament, held the post between 2006 to 2009. In 2009, he had contested for the party's deputy president position, but lost to Datuk G. Palanivel.
The other two seats were won by incumbent deputy youth and sports Datuk M. Saravanan and Johor Baru MIC chief Datuk S. Balakrishnan.
Sothinathan garnered 717 votes in the election while Saravanan was close behind with 716 votes.
Balakrishnan secured 683 votes.
The rest of the candidates who failed in their bid for the post are Perak State Assembly Speaker and incumbent Datuk S.K. Devamany, former Youth chiefs Datuk T. Mohan and Datuk S.A Vigneswaran and party treasurer-general Datuk Jaspal Singh.
Yesterday’s unofficial results portrayed Sothinathan, Saravanan and Jaspal as the winners.
However, when the results were recounted, there was a slight difference, prompting another recounting process.
MIC president Palanivel however clarified that there were only two rounds of recounting which ended at 5.20am today.
