The three robbers who were shot dead in a police shootout in Bandar Meru Raya, Ipoh today were not linked to the three gunned down at the Sentul Pasar toll plaza in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, police confirmed.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said, initial investigations revealed that the suspects were from different gangs – the Ipoh robbers’ target were jewellery shops in the state while the trio in KL mostly targeted those who just stepped out of banks.

However, investigations were still ongoing, he added.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that the Ipoh robbers were shot dead at a traffic light in Meru Raya, Jelapang about 45 minutes after they robbed a nearby jewellery shop.

While three were gunned down, one accomplice, however, managed to escape during the shootout albeit with an injury.

The four suspects were traced after they scooped about RM1 million worth of jewellery from the shop near Mydin Meru Raya, some three kilometres from the shooting spot, at 10.20am.

Perak CPO Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said, upon receiving a tip-off, one of the Cantas Khas team managed to trace a suspicious blue Proton Waja vehicle at the Meru Raya roundabout.

“Police chased the car but it sped off and crashed onto the road shoulder. One of the suspects fired a shot at the police and the police had to shoot back in self-defense,” he told reporters here today.

Acryl Sani said initial investigation revealed that the car used the by suspects had been reported stolen in Bayan Baru, Penang on Oct 3.

He said, police found two pistols – a Spanish-made Star and a Smith and Wesson, a machete, two mobile phones and the missing jewellery.

“No identifications were found on any of the suspect,” he said.

Police are now on the hunt for the injured accomplice still at-large and is asking the public as well as medical officers who have any information on the man to contact the nearest police station to facilitate investigation.

“We believe the runaway suspect is hiding in the oil palm plantation near the crime scene. Police have already surrounded the area,” Acryl Sani added.
