NEW DELHI: Prominent Indian tycoon Rahul Bajaj died on Saturday at the age of 83.
The former chairman of the diversified Bajaj Group, which Includes one of the largest motorcycle makers, was suffering from cancer and passed away at a hospital in Pune in western India, local media reported.
He is survived by sons Rajiv and Sanjiv Bajaj and daughter Sunaina Kejriwal.
Indian business leaders and politicians in their condolence messages remembered his contributions to the country's industrial sector.
"Rahul Bajaj was the one who put average Indians on two motorised wheels. In his passing away, we have lost a far-sighted and outspoken business leader," former finance minister P. Chidambaram said.
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind called Bajaj a "doyen" of Indian industry.
"His career reflected the rise and innate strength of the nation's corporate sector," he said in a tweet.
