Private college student slapped with jail term and fine

A final year student from a private college was today sentenced to one month jail and fined RM1000 by a magistrate’s court for obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duties while attempting to apprehend an ‘Occupy Dataran’ activist.

Majistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir sentenced Umar Mohammad Azmi, 23, after a four month long trial in which seven prosecution witnesses and four defence witnesses were called.

The trial took place from July 20 to Nov 28 this year.

In making the decision, Zaki said that Umar's defence was a mere denial.

Umar was charged on April 23, which also happened to be his birthday, for obstructing City Hall enforcement officer , Mohd Masran Mamat, 34, from apprehending and escorting Mohd Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin, 35, at Dataran Merdeka on April 22 around 8:05am.

Umar, who was represented by Syahredzan Johan, was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code that carries a maximum jail term of up to two years or fined a maximum of RM10,000 or both.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Wong Chai Sia prosecuted.
